For a long time there have been several manufacturers in the chipset business and the largest of them were Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, VIA, and SiS. VIA today announced that it will be leaving the motherboard chipset business, ceding the market to its competitors.

Thing is, what are they going to put their Nano's on?

Or does the VIA motherboard chipset and the Nano migrate to become an integrated solution.

Could there be a tie-up with Nvidia approaching, espcially as VIA will have a CPU and no chipset, while Nvidia have a chipset but no CPU.

VIA will keep making chipsets for their own platform, which means they will keep developing chipset technology but just not competing on the other markets for the forseeable future. With a little luck they might do well enough in the very small and energy efficient sector to keep going for many years. I'd consider giving them a chance myself if only I were building a non-gaming system.

My current system is the first one I've built that DIDN'T have a Via Chipset. I've always had good luck with them. AMD/Via/ATI/Creative systems, and contrary to all the 'experts', my systems have always been trouble free.

My first one was an AMD K-6 233 on a Tyan MB. That was the cat's ass setup in it's day, and a forerunner things to come when AMD unleased the ATHLON. Then the Abit KY7A-Raid (Via KT-133A chipset) with an Athlon 1.2 T-Bird made the Intel boys squeal like pigs.

Oh well, RIP Via Chipsets. At least AMD's newer ones give me a viable alternative to the Intel and nVidia chipsets.
