Meh, why do we need so many cores? Few are the applications that can even take advantage of 4 cores. An overclocked dual core (an e8400 at 4Ghz, for example) beats quad cores in most games.

well its because not everyone is just a gamer. Also I think as time progresses you will see the use of more cores in games. Things like supreme commander for example run much better on quad core than dual core. Thats what I love about technology, it never stays the same.

well the successor to skulltrain would likely house the dual 6 core xeon's or 8 core.... aka.. 12-16 core....

that's quite a jump to be seen.

And just a imo,

The more cores, the better.... Even today where games are only dual core at best optimised (aside from a few the take more advantage) for alot of people, having those extra 2 cores on the quady is providing a substatial advantage as more and more gamers are getting into considerably more multitasking situations. Alot of gamers are running more then just one game or program at a time now. Alot of them are now heavily into using FRAPS as an example.. which essentially consumes cpu juice like crazy making a dual core unable to cope well enough to do the job, vs a quady sitting back and doing the work exceptionally well.

Train engines run quite the hefty multiple engines.
