Antec TrueControl 550W PSU Review

So you are building the Uber (ultimate) personal computer and are in the search for the perfect power supply. Well for those of you that are, then this review will help you choose a power supply that is above and beyond the normal power supply found in today's top performing computers! Antec is the first company to come out with a power supply that has adjustable voltage rails from the factory! This is something that hardcore modders have been doing for a number of years, but now the layman can order one to his door step and be done with it! I know that must send chills down the backs of the hardcore modder, but they should fear not as other mods can still be done.

Since a power supply with adjustable voltage rails is aimed at the enthusiast market, this review will focus on the needs and wants of the enthusiast. The current market has 350W PSU's aimed to the public, whereas 400W+ are becoming the standard of power users. Following the trend of Americans, bigger must be better, right. If this is true we should see more and more people picking up 550W+ power supplies to keep that top of the line paper weight running.

One thing the end user must remember is that more power means more heat and therefore the chance of problems increases if the units are not properly quality tested. This is where Antec really shines and the generic brands fall to their knees. Antec stands behind their products 100% and this shows they believe their quality is top notch. Honestly, we have been using Antec power supplies for 3 years, and for the past 6 months both our Intel and AMD test beds have used Antec power supply units.

So enough small talk! Let's see how the Antec TrueControl 550 works on our Intel test system!

Crash Override is an unknown quantity at this point

I just love how they go on about the quality on Antec Power Supplies

Had a 450W True Power die on after only 6 months

The replacement died as soon as it was plugged in

Put in my generic 300W PSU and im still chuggin away

I've never had problems with mine. Several people on DH own Antec's and haven't had any bad experiences.

Ask Wyre about my experiences

They would be more than enough to scare you away from Antec

Lets just say that not only did the power supply fail but so did the built in safetys

So much so that I almost wound up needing a trip to hospital for electrical burns since the thing sparked and caught on fire both the new one and the old one.

(To be honest I find it hard working in a computer shop now. Everytime I work on a machine and plug it back in for the first time I leave the room and have my coworker turn it on.)
