Microsoft Patents "Page Up, Page Down"
To think that prior to 2005 there wasn't any page up / page down functionality. After all, that's when Microsoft filed a patent application for "Method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments."

Really. I mean, really. I mean, just blast the damned patent system.
I'm not totally against software patents, because they can help small software companies maintain an edge, and if an invention is significant enough, I think it's reasonable to award a patent. But this is just ridiculous. |

Every function of a keyboard has a patent to go along with it. Even ESC or Backspace. Even being able to hit more than on key at the same time is patented. The difference is when it's an open standard, or a royalty free standard. From my understanding this is the case with most of todays keyboard functions which is why manufacturers can use them without having to pay money to the patent holder. However, until they become an open or royalty free standard, if someone uses that function without a license to do so, then it becomes a case of patent infringment.
'Course, it's probably a lot more complicated that. Seeing as how I'm not a lawyer I'm sure someone will be able correct me on this. |
