Elpida claims mobile DDR memory breakthrough

JAPANESE MEMORY firm Elpida claimed it has developed the first 256Mbit double data rate mobile memory chip aimed at PDAs, handhelds, digital cameras and the like.

The firm claimed the memory chips would deliver 400Mbps, use an .11ยต (micron) process and yield 90 per cent less heat than standard DDR SDRAMs, as well as being around 10 per cent smaller.

The chips use low voltage power supply and are nine by thirteen millimeters.

Elpida will also sell the chips in a bare die configuration so they can be built into packages using other semiconductors.
