Chrome's JavaScript challenge to Silverlight
The biggest rival for Microsoft's next-generation Silverlight Web technology will be JavaScript, not Adobe Systems' ubiquitous Flash, according to experts speaking at Microsoft's Tech.Ed conference here.

If this is the case, what do you think all the unemployed flash developers will start doing? Actionscript is based on the ECMAscript standard just like javascript is. By the time javascript is actually in any sort of position to get developer attention it will have to be using ECMA 4 because that's a real OO programming language.
So the argument that an existing technology is going to wipe out the two contenders isn't founded on anything. Javascript needs to find a way to get the latest standard into everyone's homes, just like silverlight will need to do for its player. For years people won't be able to write in it because they will lose users on current browsers with no support. This is the plague of web development and why proprietary plugins like flash and silverlight look so attractive for rich internet apps. The only technology already in 99% of computers is flash. To everyone else I say good fucking luck.

I'm talking about an ECMAscript 4 implementation. As far as I know, all browsers still have their javascript using the spec for version 3. Version 4 is less of a scripting language and more of a programming language. It contains a real OO implementation with classes, packages, and strong typing.
