As Intel officially unveiled its six-core "Dunnington" Xeon 7400 processor Monday, Unisys rolled out servers boasting up to 96 cores--with a catch.

The catch, Windows supports a maximum of 64 cores (Linux can do the full 96).

While they suggest that windows would run 4 cores per CPu with all sockets loaded, it would presumably be more power-efficient to only load 10 sockets with 6 core chips, for a 60 core windows server.

Does anyone REALLY need that much processing power? I seriously doubt it. Maybe scientists, but that's about it.

Stupid question, but are these gonna be LGA771 or LGA775? I've always thought Xeons run on 771 or am i wrong in thinking that?

they'll likely be 771..... i would only expect it..

however the desktop versions will likely be 775...

but i'm also expecting that intel will be making a socket change here fairly soon.
