ATI gets top mobo endorsements for Pentium 4 chipsets

CANADIAN SEMI firm ATI Technology has scored a number of big motherboard wins for its Pentium 4 chipsets, according to a report in today's Economic News.

Asustek, Gigabyte and Microstar International (MSI) will all use chipsets from ATI, the newspaper said.

While the first chipsets off the starting block are expected to be for notebook machines, it will also produce desktop chipsets too.

According to the EN, the boards from Asus, Gigabyte and MSI will appear in August, with the chipsets supporting dual DDR memory and an integrated Radeon 9200 graphics core.

The desktop chipset will compete head on with Intel's Springdale 865G chipset. ATI has had a notably close relationship with Intel for some time.

Some have said this is an indication of the fraternal and benevolent partnership between them, while the more cynical have long suspected that Intel has had to license its graphics chipset technology for other, more patent, reasons.
