SIS does u-turn on 655FX chipset

CHIPSET FIRM Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS) has done a u-turn on its plans for the 655 chipset and has gone into reverse on its previous story.

The firm told us earlier this week that it wouldn't make the 655 work with 800MHz front side buses (FSB) but now PR bunnies conducting the omnibus have found reverse on their PR spin stick.

SIS told us here that it wasn't going to convert the 655 to work with Pentium 4 microprocessors.

But now it seems panic has set into the SIS Spinola department and it will now make a version that does work with the faster bus.

In short, this means that 655 will not support FSB 800 CPUs but the all singing, all dancing, all spinning, all whistling version 655FX will.

In the third quarter of this year.

Sigh. So all is now fragrant in the chipset bowl once more, although we wonder how boards based on the 655FX will perform against Springdale and Canterwood.
