Microsoft Gives Windows XP Extra Life

Microsoft has caved in to OEMs again.

You probably know that the "Downgrade Rights" policy available to OEMs allows them to supply a Windows XP system image CD along with the computer, if you buy either Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate. Some, such as Dell, will even "pre-downgrade" your system before shipping, saving you the manual labor. This was scheduled to disappear as of January 31st, 2009. But Microsoft has bowed to pressure, and now says the policy will continue until July 31st of 2009.

Welcome to DH. This question is probably best addressed in one of our OS forums. This would be the appropriate one for your question:

Re: Microsoft Gives Windows XP Extra Life

I think you should reconsider about switching back to XP.

If you give it a week I fully guarantee you will find Vista everything you we not expecting because my guess is you think it sucks.

If you give it a fair trial you will love it!

QFT x 1000!

Any 1/2 way decent newer system will run Vista, and run it well. Quit listening to the fools that tell you otherwise. Listen to us ACTUAL USERS, not people who make their living by lieing to you.

The same thing goes with the 32 bit vs 62 bit debate. 64 bit is the present and the future. 32 bit OSs are dinosaurs, and should be given a decent burial right alongside XP.

Re: Microsoft Gives Windows XP Extra Life

For new systems, I dont see any reason to run Xp.

For older systems it's perfectly understandable and they continue to update it with critical errors all the way to 2014, that should do it.

Re: Microsoft Gives Windows XP Extra Life

You need to think long and hard about upgrading an XP system to Vista, and just as long and hard about downgrading Vista to XP.

To take the second first, if you don't like the look of Vista, you can probably tweak it down to look more like XP, just as you can tweak XP to look more like 98.

If there is anything that won't work in Vista, AFTER trying compatibility mode (other than some security and disk twiddling stuff, just don't mess with anything that has deeper system contact than a normal program), then consider replacing the offending programs.

On the other hand, if you're happy with XP, all there really is to look forward to in Vista is aggravation and decoration.

In a nutshell, the plus points in Vista are:
1. Security, while DEP in XP SP2 is good, address space randomization in Vista adds considerably more power to this style of restricting the window of vulnerability.
2. Decoration - though this is absent from the cheapest version, to the average user, Vista = Aero Glass!
3. DirectX 10 - with DX10 cards across all price ranges, DX10 can begin to fly.
