Intel Is Investigating Centrino Bug

An annoying bug has been found on Intel’s Centrino platform this week. According to eWeek, when VPN software is installed on a Centrino notebook, it causes blue screens in certain situations.

The report claims that ccurrently, when a VPN client is installed into a laptop powered by Centrino, the VPN causes a blue screen to appear when the device is rebooted. Since the problem is believed to come from Intel’s PROSet drivers, Nortel has already issued a work-around for the problem. According to the bulletin, the wireless card in the laptop will still work, but the added functionality provided by the PROSet drivers will not be available and users will have to use Windows XP’s managing software.

Both Intel and Nortel are now working on the solution for the problem.

eWeek claims that according to Intel’s Web site, the PROSet Adapter Switching feature also must be disabled when VPN client software from several companies are in use. Included in that list are Cisco Systems’ 3000 VPN, Checkpoint Software Technologies’ VPN (in non-office transparent mode, connect office mode and connect non-office mode), Microsoft’s VPN (L2TP over IPsec transport and L2TP for configuration with ESP-in-UDP) and even Intel’s own Netstructure VPN.

Some end-users still find it not enough to just get a work-around and would like to fix the issue once and for all since PROSet actually bring some management functions that are sometimes needed.
