Are the desktop PC's days waning?
Is there anyone you know whose holiday wish list includes a computer weighted down, by design, to his desk? Lack of portability may be becoming a real liability for the desktop PC, but that doesn't mean it'll disappear anytime soon.

No. Perhaps in another 20 years.

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
at this stage for professionals and gamers who need high end systems, no, mobile platforms just can't compete in terms of raw power yet
but for those who don't use computers for much more than music/internet/movies etc, i'd say it's a definate possibility we're going to see few all-in-ones and compact computers being sold over the next five years or so as people migrate over to laptops and netbooks

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
I don't like the small size of the screens/keyboard/mouse that a notebook has especially when I type alot (code). I couldn't stand to use a notebook for hours on end. Not to mention I like having a lot of storage and being able to game on the same machine (I also code 3d apps so...). No I don't think notebooks are going to completely take over the industry to the point that the desktop disappears any time soon.

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
i hate laptops personally .... i mean i sell em.. but i can't stand to use them.... so gaud awful and costly for anything decent.
Laptops will never replace desktops..... for some normal joe blows it will, but never for anything that is serious about anything.

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
being portable is a good thing, but between a desktop and a laptop, I'll will not be picking a laptop....difficult/expensive to upgrade, itself being expensive in the first place..... even if i do have 1, I'll never never ditch my RIG.

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
There's an alternative to desktop PCs?

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
This question has popped up in some shape or form every year for since the PS2 hit the scene
it will continue to evolve and change in shape and content but PC's will be with us for many many more years |

Re: Are the desktop PC's days waning?
The smaller you go below mid/mini tower ATX (why did the standard and "Pizza Box" destops die out, it was a handy place to stand the monitor, while the mini tower is an ungainly lump stood beside it, and too small to be good on a low shelf), the more painful upgrade and performance options become.
It's possible that the conventional destop may slide toward the performance and upgrader end of the market, while home/office goes laptop or SFF. For home entertainment PCs, I'm sure there would be greater other half acceptance if the size can be kept down to that of a VCR, DVD or STB.
