Sustaining Moore's Law - 10 Years of the CPU

Over the years, we have seen the central processing unit or CPU of the computer shrink from the size of a house to that of a stamp while its raw processing power has increased exponentially. We take a look at how far CPUs have progressed in the last 10 years and the major highlights from 1998 to 2008.

Re: Sustaining Moore's Law - 10 Years of the CPU

I know even Gordon E. Moore said it was merely an observation that he made, never quoted by him as a law, but lots of speculation have warped the context of his remark a bit. As the former CEO of Intel his credibility isnt in question, nor is the primace that his observation was sound ten years ago, but how does it stack up now? I think the CPU and GPU fab process is near the edge of a revolutionary change soon on the moleculer level. I hope Gordon is here to see it.

Re: Sustaining Moore's Law - 10 Years of the CPU

Interesting read and I think Mr. Moore was spot on

Transistor count increases and die size shrinks lowering impedance and increasing speed .. makes sense here.

Mr. Moore's statement makes much more sense than what one of my college instructors Bob Bodnar said and I hope he or someone he knows sees this post. He said more or less in 1986 in the 80186 days that ....

"Processor speeds were nearly at the limit because the speeds were approaching the maximum speed possible through the wire"

Just as an FYI Mr.Bodnar was fired from the college 6 months after I graduated due to incompetance .. just thought I would share that !!

Re: Sustaining Moore's Law - 10 Years of the CPU

Moore's law, rather his statement turned into "law", has indeed held up. i wonder for how long this will hold true.
