Apple to Replace 17" MacBook Pro Batteries in Stores

You know you would think as a business stand point it would be cheaper to let the customer remove and replace by them self and not have to pay employees to do it.
Or am I missing something? |

unfortunately apple choose form over function, and while it would probably be easier your method, it would mess up the form of the new laptop (and from the sounds of it, they've just packed soft-cell batteries into ever spare corner of the unit...)

There are two possibilities, that they will be making a profit with every change and that they are confident in their product so they believe that there will be too little demand for the service to require any additional staff and expences.
