actually no it's not - it'll give an audible alert to those around that a photo has been taken - camera phones have become the favoured tools of the perverted lately...

and a single picture is worse then video how?

what are they going to added, a whirling sound like a film strip running the a film projector while the video is recording?

It's not going to slow anyone down, specially with how easily modifiable the phones are and the software on them. It'll make it more annoying for the general user and a meer few minutes of tinkering for anyone that wants to get around it.

Re: Politician Proposes Mandatory Shutter Sound on Camera Phone

no it won't stop people from doing it, but it will make it much more difficult to take photos with out alerting someone nearby (and nearby is all camera phones are good for taking photos of)

of course there are going to be ways around it, i don't doubt that - but it's a step in the right direction for privacy

it's a step in the right direction of being ignorant and a false sense of security. (aka wrong direction)

as i've said before, the more products that are produced with safety built into them to help protect it's use from yourself and others.. the more idiotic people become, the more loopholes are made and generally more garbage is produce from it. The money could have easily been spent on solving the problem, not presenting a temporary and uncontrolable one.

Like ALL laws of this type, it will be ignored and broken by the people it's aimed at. In the end it will only negatively impact those that won't break the law that it's to 'protect' us from anyway.

This is nothing more than a "feel good" law. What's needed is to agressively apply the laws that are already on the books. When a criminal commits a crime, he doesn't give a rats's ass how many laws he breaks. All he cares about are the odds of getting caught, and what might happen if he gets caught.

Lame.

I've got a cheapo cellphone, with no way to disable an shutter sound, so I simply don't use it for any pictures. Ever.

Sadly, many of them don't care a whole lot about this one.

I couldn't agree more. Also, Japanese seem like one disturbed people.

I wonder if the sound would be perscribed by the law, or the choice would be left to the manufacturers? Maybe the camera could say something interesting?
