U.S. Only Large Nation to Switch to Digital Overnight
While many countries have gone digital or plan to, America's transition is called one of the boldest and riskiest because it is the only large country that has tried to make the transition overnight. The original deadline for the transition was set to be February 17, a bit more than a week from now.

Re: U.S. Only Large Nation to Switch to Digital Overnight
Another point that often seems to be missed is the cable switchover, though not a planned, regulatory switchover, cable operators are generally looking to phase out bandwidth-hungry analog services in favour of more digital capacity.
The 'other' digital TV conversion might cost you - The Red Tape Chronicles - MSNBC.com When that happens, "cable tuning" equipment that could cover unscrambled channels will no longer have a service. Looking over the broadcast switchover from the other side of the pond.... In the UK, the DVB-T switchover has been progressive, but patchy, beginning with the legacy of the failed OnDigital/ITV Digital service as a base for running "Freeview", though to a degree, that did mean there was something more than a zero baseline to start with. The next phase was the promotion of extra free channels as a reason to "go Digital", before the scheduled change was really much to the fore. The final phase-out was delayed, or at least the original schedule plan was quietly slipped. Digital television transition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The plan began with a very small test area of Ferryside in Wales (2005), then another test area (Whitehaven), then a rolling plan leaving the highly populated London area until last (2012). Pre-switchover, some areas have adequate digital coverage to allow customers to benefit from the digital service, while other areas have no or partial service. Some notable failures in the UK digital system, have been the obsoletion of significant numbers of boxes, including some PVRs, by a system change. A further change from 2k to 8k OFDM mode as part of the full switchover will impact some additional models.
