You've probably seen them on the street: cell-phone chatting, music-loving pedestrians who sometimes act as if talking into a mouthpiece or slipping on a pair of headphones raises an impenetrable shield.

But preoccupied pedestrians, especially those listening at high volume, risk more than hearing impairment. Their absorption can create a loss of "situation awareness" similar to that of distracted drivers.

Inattention can have serious — even deadly — consequences on roads and railroad tracks.

this article is just stating the obvious

-but saying that, I used to walk around the city of Melbourne with my headphones on, not at deafening levels though

I trained my eyes to notice a lot more than I would have otherwise, "heightening" the sense of sight I guess...

It's stating the obvious, but indeed, many don't think twice about it ... obvious or no, and I think that's the point.

true - if you're going to walk around with headphones on blocking out stret noise, at least pay attention to what's going on around you

majority of people are so stupid that they don't think they should need to think twice and expect themselves to pick up on it naturally which is kinda like expecting to pick up a real guitar and play dragonforce's through the fire and flames without a mistake.

The moment one of the senses is considerably hindered that directly affect your everyday life and transport, such as sight/sound, you have to LEARN to compensate for it, and focus on it...

Chatting and music? Come on, I used to walk while reading a book when I was young. Hit a lamp post once.
