On Demand Street Lights Grow Popular in Germany
I've often wondered just how much electricity is wasted because of all the lights left on all night long in cities. I don't mean street lights necessarily, so much as advertising and lights in closed stores and the like. But as far as street lights go, some towns in Germany are finding out just how much is wasted, by turning out the lights at night.

Re: On Demand Street Lights Grow Popular in Germany
Bravo! Fantastic! "The town saves 4000 euros ($5300) per year." Incredible! I wouldn't mind walking the damn streets at night in complete darkness knowing that.
Or they wouldn't have to be dark at all, with savings like that I can see how implementing a system like the one in Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz would quickly pay for itself. Or maybe we could take after the Rahden folk and cough up 3.5e every time we'd want a street light turned on. It's not like the country should pay for our light, they have other things to spend the tax money on. And anyway, it's not just about the money, as the good people of treehugger.com realise, it's about saving trees and I for one say it's worth it, because every tree saved is a tree a bureaucrat who thinks up stuff like this could hang off.
