Apple first to release Nehalem i7 8 core Desktop

As our news guys mentioned in another post today Apple have updated a lot of their line, including the mac mini and the Imac. The one that caught my eye however is that they are offering a Quad Core I7 Nehalmen Machine @ 2.66ghz and an 8 core machine with dual quad core I7 cpus @ 2.26ghz.

The rumours of Skulltrail being replaced by an 8 core I7 machine are already proved.

You can order these machines at the Apple store, but be prepared to dig deep - the 8 core machine costs £2,499. Interestingly it also features Nvidia GT120 graphics. (up to 4). For those with unlimited funds you can upgrade both of the cpus to the 2.93ghz models, but this alone costs an extra £2,080.01. Do you fancy 32gb of ram? then be prepared to add another £4,880.00 to the price. ouch.

I kitted out a desktop to the maximum specifications for those interested (free shipping is a great option! )

Haha, the prices of the upgrades are just ridiculous. Typically Apple.

What are these nVidia GT120s? Workstation GPUs probably?

hahaha ridiculous! Do you get a free mousemat ?

It's fun seeing how much things would cost if money didn't matter.

Just noticed how much you could pay per month for that... You could get a small mortgage on a house for that much.

Never heard of the GT120 before. The rest looks sweet, apart from the price that is.

makes my current machine looks a little weak, but hell, i hardly ever use the full power i've got anyway

Re: Apple first to release Nehalem i7 8 core Desktop

I am not impressed at all.

8-core 2.26 Gainestown MP is $3300. Last gen 8-core 2.66GHz Harpertown MP was ~$3000. So 400MHz slower and $300 more. The Gainestown is faster clock for clock, but I doubt enough to justify the clock decrease and price increase. To get an 8-core 2.66GHz machine you have to add another $1200.

Intel charges $373 for each of the e5520's in the MP. The 2.66GHz E5430 Harpertowns in the previous gen MP sell @ newegg for $479. So they are using cpu's worth $200 less and sell the machine for $300 more.

Colour me unimpressed.

Re: Apple first to release Nehalem i7 8 core Desktop

I believe our production team in Peterborough uses the latest and most robust Apple configuration for editing our training materials, I am headed there in two weeks to check their system out. I think it is very similiar to aforementioned configuration you mentioned earlier but with two 30 inch monitors.
I want to see what software they are using and look into setting up my own photo studio. The Apple rep will be in Norwich at Warehouseexpress on the industrial estate soon so I can obtain some of the calibration expertise I am looking for the color monkey.
I finally got my money back from Alienware but no apology for the delay, save for the indignation I felt attempting to get a deal out of Alienware.
Hype or no hype, Apple has a great more to offer than any company that sells reboxed Clevo's and markets their lappy's as the technical leader in the laptop gaming industry.
I dont give a rats butt about gaming, give me raw performance without all the hooplah and hutzbah.
Give me an Apple.
I have owned 16 PC's in my lifetime and bought 4 Apples, but always for very grateful family members that want something that meets all their needs.
I am taking a very serious look at the Apple solution, and I dont think I will be disappointed.
with all our production, post production and field work peformed it makes sense for me to take a step up to the table and look at the new horizon in performance and reliability.
Caramel color would be interesting too I imagine.
I wish I could get a Red one..LOL.
I am sure there is an Aussie out there that has already figured out how to paint them any color they want without making a terrible mess out of it.

the lowest speed 8 core machine from the early 2008 range was 2.8ghz, not 2.66 - there was the option of dropping down to a single 2.8ghz, but that's still the slowest speed they had available. I think with the first release Mac Pro there was the 2.66ghz option.

The CPUs in my current pro are the Xeon E5462, not the E5430

though I do agree the price has gone up considerably, and seems to each revision.

If the base was 2.8GHz 8-core than that is even worse. There is no way the current base MP is faster than the previous gen base then. I am very thankful I didn't wait for this MP from December when I wanted to buy a new computer.

Re: Apple first to release Nehalem i7 8 core Desktop

I think it'll be interesting to see some independent benchmarks between the two models, but needless to say I wouldn't be disappointed with either

Now... to get me one of those Radeon cards....

Hmm odd, there's no workstation GPU option this time around, there always has been up until now... maybe the 4870 is powerful enough?

EDIT: externally the machines are identical, except for the complete lack of s400 firewire, instead they've been replaced with extra s800 firewire ports, for a total of 4... i imagine 9pin-6pin adaptors are going to sell quite well

I see no infos about the nuclear reactor that will power this monster.
The price is too edgy , will Google this card Gtx120.

I get it that they are not meant to be gaming machines, but I still don't understand why they do not offer more power solutions (GPU), at least as options. Anyone who is willing to pay that kind of money on a computer, I am sure he/she woulnd't mind paying a couple hundrend more for that.

What a nice rendering workstation that would make - Apple or otherwise! 16 virtual i7 cores - Lordy Lord!
