Google Wants to Make Ads More Interesting

On Wednesday, Google unveiled what it called "interest-based" advertising. In reality, what they really unveiled was behaviorally targeted ads. And that has some privacy advocates crying foul.

So if you search for [digital camera] on Google, you'll get ads related to digital cameras. If you are visiting the website of one of our AdSense partners, you would see ads based on the content of the page. For example, if you're reading a sports page on a newspaper website, we might show ads for running shoes. Or we can show ads for home maintenance services alongside a YouTube video instructing you on how to perform a simple repair.
Makes perfectly good sense to me. Who wants to search for lets say kids clothing for school and see a Viagra ad next to it.

Re: Google Wants to Make Ads More Interesting

Hmm, it's not quite like that. As far as I know, the adds are already being served based on the content of the page (though the system is not perfect so things you described happen, but that's not the intended behavior).

What is going to change is that Google apparently intends to track individual browsing habits and display adds based on that, which means that you may still get that Viagra add while shopping for kids' clothes if you visited a naughty website before that.
