How to turn your Geforce 9800GTX+ into a GTS 250
Nvidia didn't make much friends over their recent launch of the Geforce GTS 250. Not surprising, as many tech sites found out that the GTS 250 is nothing more than a Geforce 9800GTX+ with an updated BIOS. To make matters worse, Nvidia then refused many tech sites for sampling their GTS 250 (knowing they will get slated for it). Having said that, the Geforce GTS 250 is still an OK card in terms of price and perfomance. It competes directly with ATI's Radeon HD 4850, which have been selling quite well.

That is true in some ways, but a 8800GTX could never be flashed to a 9800 series card, as the 8800GTX uses the old G80 core, not the new G92. The G80 and G92 do not differ vastly in performance but they are quite different technologically. I'm guessing you already new that though.

SLI. Now, instead of looking for another 9800GTX+ to use for SLI all you'd need is to flash your firmware, and pickup a GTS250 to go with it. In most cases you can find the GTS250 cheaper than the 9800GTX+, so that's one plus to this. The other is that as Nvidia phases out the 9800GTX+ you'd have to go a different route if down the road you wanted to go SLI with your current card since you won't be able to get one. That means you'd have to buy 2 new cards next time around. This way, for the moment, you'd just need to buy one.

I'm dissapointed with the GTS250 series. It's only a tad faster then 9800gtx+, but every price I've seen on the so far, has been quite higher then 9800gtx+, but that's maybe only here in euroland.

The whole water cooling stuff was bit to for heavy me and also I prefer a system which is a tad more silent when idling. So I found a happy new home for it, which was a tough decision, because is an outstanding card and so silent when playing

And actually I'm running a borrowed 8800gts 320 right now, because my 8800gt went fubar one week after I sold my 9800 gtx+ >_> So i've been loking for a new card and was real close buying a gts260-216 yesterday from overclockers.oc.uk, because of the low British pound. But i'm gonna wait, I really don't game on my PC at the moment, nothing else then L4D, which that 8800gts handles fine and my friend are not gonna need his 8800gts back anytime soon :P

It would be hilarious for someone to have a 8800GTX and then buy a 9800 and then buy a 250. Buying the "same" card 3 times lol.

Computing is always like that though - you have to do your research, that's the only reason I got into PCs in the first place - wondering why my mum's new PC featuring an awesome 2.8ghz of processor was a load of crap in games.

And Erroneous - yes this card does make a racket at idle, louder than under full load, I have no idea why, but the answer is to get f@h.
