Encarta to Fold; Wikipedia Cheers

A post on Microsoft's Encarta website notes that the Encarta website, as well as the software products bearing the Encarta name, are being discontinued.

I do think there's a place for a software based reference materials, but they have to be technically up to date. Last I saw of Encarta (and I have two versions), it had 3D walkthroughs and 3D flights that looked like they belonged in 1990.

I still have an offline encyclopedia installed on my laptop, since I'm not always online, and might want to look something up, but I agree that there's a lot less appeal for such a product these days, and you can get Wikipedia offline, so there's not much point in paying for this. A google search just now found me Pocket Wikipedia, and with that on my phone I think I'm golden.

I still use britannia once in a while; haven't heard of encarta since win 95 days >.>
