Windows XP Gets Another Reprieve, Into the Windows 7 Timeframe: Report
Despite the fact that it should have retired long ago, Windows XP continues to get a life extension again, again, and again. Downgrade rights were supposed to end on July 31st of this year, but a report indicates that HP has finagled an extension to that, allowing downgrades from Windows 7 to Windows XP.

Unless they are planning on selling shit hardware, what is the point of doing this, I get not.

Re: Windows XP Gets Another Reprieve, Into the Windows 7 Timeframe: Report
I figure the only reason would be that some people are still asking for XP, regardless of hardware. I figure that having to adapt to a new UI and face some software incompatibilities is the reason.

If you have rooms full of XP systems and need one new system, what do yo do?
Well, I guess for one thing you SHOULD be planning an upgrade strategy, but who wants to spend a pile of money replacing something that works, especially in current conditions. From the sound of it, Win7 could be a high point, but could flop due to the state of the economy. I think the high points from MS have been: DOS 3.3, DOS 6.22 Windows 3.11 Windows 98SE Windows XP The low points: DOS 4 Windows 3.0 Windows 95 Windows ME Not sure I'd call Vista a low point, but the really important stuff is under the hood, while the most obvious is just fluff.

Re: Windows XP Gets Another Reprieve, Into the Windows 7 Timeframe: Report
I use Vista 64 since September-October 2008 and I have never encountered a more stable, problem free OS, apart perhaps from TOS, but not exactly the same thing. Vista, even the 64 version, is in my experience far more stable, far more combatible! with older software, than XP ever was. I haven't tried 16bit software yet, I give you that, so I will just leave a small window there.
If it is a UI thing, then I don't get it. How are they any different? Just disable the UAC so that you don't get any UAC messages and the system looks like XP. Hell, you can even disable AERO and have either the graphics look almost the same. I think it is more a matter of ignorance than anything else. Someone I know recently bought a new PC, a powerful dual core system, with windows XP. I asked him why he went with XP and he told me because someone told him that Vista sucks and it has problem with software that XP doesn't. That's it, Vista sucks...I seriously believe that most people that say that talk out of their ass and have either zero experience with Vista or they tried Vista on their ancient system and because it didn't run as good as XP did, with AERO on too, then Vista must suck. Or perhaps they tried the very first round of drivers for Vista a couple of years ago, and of course drivers never improve...and so on.

anyways, the other "OS that wouldn't die", i feel is win98se. even to this day, i come across people who don't want to upgrade to winXP. sometimes, they have reason not to. like, a program doesn't run right, or doesn't run at all under winXP. but, some people have absolutely no reason not to upgrade to winXP or Vista now, and prefer the older OS.
