ATI, Intel set to compete with Taiwanese chipset makers
ATI Technologies and Intel will shortly release new chipsets competing directly with products from VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), both Taiwan-based chipset makers. ATI’s new mainstream desktop Pentium 4 chipset, the RS300, is officially set to be announced in late June and begin shipping in July or August. Meanwhile, Intel is set to announce its 865PL chipset, a value line chipset aimed specifically at grabbing market share from VIA and SiS.
VIA and SiS had hoped to regain ground by introducing a new generation of products in the third quarter, following month-on-month sales declines of over 20% in May. However, SiS’s current 648FX chipset and VIA’s upcoming PT800 will face stiff competition from ATI and Intel. ATI’s new RS300 P4 chipset will feature dual-channel DDR400 and 800MHz FSB support, along with an integrated ATI Radeon 9000-based graphics core. The RS300 will directly compete with Intel’s 865G chipset but undercut it on price. Its price will be at a level similar to that of products from the Taiwanese chipset makers. First-tier motherboard makers, including Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology, said that they are already incorporating the RS300 into their next batch of products. Intel’s current 865P value chipset, supporting only a 533MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR333, has not gained the favor of consumers, according to motherboard makers. Thus, Intel plans to upgrade the chipset to support 800MHz FSB and single-channel DDR400, calling it the 865PL. Intel hopes to release the 865PL in August, but final plans have not been set. Motherboard makers believe that the 865PL’s technical superiority over its predecessor is a selling point in itself but its low pricing will also prompt quick adoption. ______________________ Source: DigiTimes |
