Much ado about nothing, that's my thought. Next time you run Firefox it'd ask you to be the default, you click "yes" and that's it. Most likely you don't even use the express setup if you're using Firefox (I certainly didn't).

Agreed. Making a newly installed browser default will be fine for most people most of the time, and that's the best a one click install can go for.

Re: Microsoft IE 8 Default Browser Controversy -- Trickery or Much Ado About Nothing?

"It is apparent that the story is being overhyped slightly, as users who had their default overriden, would soon get a chance to fix it; almost all third party browsers (Firefox, Opera) to upon open prompt users to make them the default, if they are not the current default. However, it may be significant as a certain number of users leave their computers on for days, with open browser applications. An install of IE 8, for such users would equate to addition of traffic from email or document links to IE 8, until the user intervened to reset the default. This could give Microsoft a small but significant boost in marketshare."

Rofl... are you SERIOUS?

I like the overhyped "slightly" comment... I'd say this is a HUGE overhype.
If a person leaves their browser on for days and is too stupid to read the IE8 installation dialogue box... then... well....

90% of the time an "express" option will set that particular application as the default whatever... that's what makes it express, no dialogue boxes, no choice where to save it to, etc...

The bigger the corporation the more critics there are.
