Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

SOMEWHERE OVER COLORADO--As I wind my way back to San Francisco, the release candidate of Windows 7 has made its public debut.

After arriving first on torrent sites and then last week showing up on Microsoft's developer program Web sites, the operating system arrived on the main Microsoft.com late on Monday night. The software was slated to be made publicly available on Tuesday.

Re: Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

Shall be downloading after work, I've had nothing but smooth sailing with the Beta so I've got a drive ready to put on the RC. Then hopefully I should be able to wipe the beta partition away on the xp disc and reclaim that space again. So I'll have a simple dual boot XP on one physical disc (just in case) and 7 on the other. By the time the RC runs out I will have got my new box so woop de doo.

One problem. Being a silly bugger I have packed all by blank DVDS away as in the process of moving. I am assuming that I should be able to mount the image on a virtual drive on another partition in order to properly format and install 7 on my chosen disc. I won't need to boot from the disc itself, will I ? That's how I did it for the beta and I can't imagine it's changed.

Re: Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

I'm amazed at the D/L speed I'm getting 7-800+ KB/sec

20% done with @ 1 hr ETA.

I was expecting to to be a LOT slower than that, considering just how many people are wanting to get RC1.

That's how I installed the leaked version of RC1. I'll be installing this version the same way.

Re: Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

When does this RC1 run out and when Win7 is properly released will I be able to just buy a licence and not reinstall or will I have to buy an OEM disc and do a full reinstall?

From the FAQ on the RC1 D/L page:

Quote:
This is a very important question, because Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 RC each have an expiration date. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. The Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010. In both cases, you’ll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS and reinstall all your programs and data.

Re: Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

Well I think it is fair about the shutdowns.

No one should expect this beta to last forever. Of course they are not giving this away for free, but then again people will be complaining down the road that their computers keep shutting down and never bought the retail copy lol...

This really is more than enough time. I am very happy I can use it until the retail copy comes out!!!

I had downloaded it a few days ago so I am already on the 7100 build

Re: Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I'm waiting till my new HDD comes before reinstalling Win7 and it lasting up till March 2010 will give me plenty of time to sort out the cash for a brand new PC to go with a retail/oem copy.
