Intel phasing out another Nehalem processor
Yesterday, we learned that Intel has begun phasing out the Core i7 940 processor, today we are told that the Extreme version 965 will be retired this year as well. Looks like the current three i7s weren’t really part of the actual Nehalem launch, but more of a vanguard, or, if you prefer to be a bit more direct, sort of placebo products to maintain the promised 2008 introduction date of the technology. 2009 shapes up to be Nehalem’s year, not 2008.

They must be producing another product very soon. But It is strange they phased out them in a less than a year of production hmm.

Yep, Core i5 is due this year.
With that said, there is nothing wrong with Core i7 and anyone who has them has a fantastic futureproof processor, it was most certainly not a placebo, more like a knockout punch to AMDs high end AM3 Phenom II.

Re: Intel phasing out another Nehalem processor
the Phenom II AM3 solution is providing dollar for dollar a damn good run for the i920's money without overclocking.... both cpu's fiddle back and forth, course the i920's addition of HT and the triple channel memory present alot of robust room over the phenom.
AMD's phenom II is indeed a realistic contender vs the previous amd solutions that were a bust. But amd has made some major improvements. This is without taking overclocking into consideration either.

Re: Intel phasing out another Nehalem processor
The only reason the 940 is disappearing is due to the release of the i7 950. Which will be in the same price range as the 940 was. However IMO both are way overpriced for what they provide compared to the 920.

As long as they won't "phase-out" socket 1366 in a year or two down the road...
