Microsoft tweaks antipiracy tech for Windows 7

With Windows 7, Microsoft is making some subtle changes to the ways it tries to thwart piracy.
As has been the case for some time, Microsoft's strategy hinges on requiring a user to electronically verify their copy of the software, a process known as activation, and then the software also periodically validates that a copy of Windows is genuine.

Re: Microsoft tweaks antipiracy tech for Windows 7

I wish they improved the reliability of the activation process.

My friend recently bought a laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed. At some point, it started nagging about how it had to be activated, but when she tried that she received an error message and Windows declared that it was a pirated copy, which was nonsense (though she would make a cute pirate). She called me up, I tried activating and strangely enough it said that there had been a server error. I retyped the serial from the sticker at the bottom of the computer and got the same message. Then I typed in a serial of my own which I weren't using, but no luck that time either. Eventually, I activated over phone.

Mentioned elsewhere but I have to reactivate windows EVERY single time I change a overclock on my system. You have no idea how infuriating that is.
