Microsoft urged to give Vista Ultimate users free Windows 7 upgrades

Microsoft should give Windows Vista Ultimate owners a free upgrade to Windows 7, an analyst said Monday.

"I'd like to see a free upgrade [to Windows 7] for Vista Ultimate users," said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft. "It would buy them a lot of good will, and I don't think it would cost them much."

Well I don't disagree a free upgrade would be great, but I can't see it happening myself.

if not free, maybe a big discount... or paying the price of "basic windows 7" but getting "ultimate"

indeed... a discount.... giving people a download link if they present a valid ultimate key... and then being able to use that key with win7....

It would certainly help the adoption of Win 7. Also, MS could use the goodwill for this operating system, given the public general lack of enthusiasm for Vista, unfounded or not.

coupled with the promised extras that failed to materialise for the Ultimate Vista users .... this would be a nice way of saying Ok we f00ked up with Vista here's a bit of an incentive to go for 7

bout the only way ill go to win7. at least until sp1 release. & i see some compelling reason to fork out yet more $$ when my vista ultimate is doing great.

i agree. but they should do something for ultimate users. while i got my full retail vers at a good discount there is no way the price diff between it & home premium(wich is on my wifes comp) is justified. also y im not in a hurry to put down even more $$ for what is essentially vista se.
but i do think it is going to be an 'oh well' situation.

Microsoft does not have a trend of "cheap" products.

However with the you buy a computer after July or whatever the month is now they will give you a free copy of 7 when it comes out is a cool deal.

I could maybe see this happening.

Yeah I get all that stuff free for being an IT student, but it is single license just for 1 person etc.

They give students amazing deals because they want you to get hooked on it and when you start working for a business they hope you go to Microsoft for your needs.

There is some logic behind that lol.

Apple does the same thing. They give schools very cheap computers to use to try and get users hooked on them. They always had them when I was younger in school. To bad back then they really sucked big time. Now a days I would not mind as much lol.

None of that stuff is through MSDN AA, it's available to any students, regardless of what deals their schools have with MS.
