MacBook Interfaces: So Many Ports, So Little Space

There's a wide variety of hardware interfaces associated with personal computers, and laptops simply don't have room to accommodate them all. In recent MacBook models, Apple has had to sacrifice some interfaces in the name of size -- and in the name of progress. But all those ports do basically the same thing: move data. Might we one day see one interface to rule them all?

not bloody likely - USB's host/slave topology adds an extra latency that firewire doesn't, which is why Firewire is used for high-bandwidth HDD access and multi-channel audio

So many ports, so little support.

It's no criticism to you Dave, I guess Apple's decision makes sense for their consumer models, by if the drop support for FireWire on their pro model then they are going to alienate a lot of people

And that's not just customers - as recently as mid-07 Apple partnered with Apogee to integrate high end audio interfaces into Apple's Logic DAW - including the two-channel Duet, the perfect interface for a Macbook for peope recording on the go
