AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

JUST BEFORE NOON Taipei time on Wendesday, ATI is going to to drop a bombshell on the graphics world, showing off working 40nm DX11 silicon. Nvidia has yet to tape out a DX11 part or put a 40nm chip on the market.

The cards that will be showed off are Evergreen/Cypress, what is commonly referred to as R870. That code name however is not used internally, so if you ever see any leaked specs or charts with R870 on them, they are flat out faked. There have been several of these bandied around, but they are all laughably off.

AMD promised that they would have DX11 cards out on the market by the Windows 7 launch, and barring a massive and as of yet undetected problem, it looks like they will make that with ease. In the mean time, at the company's Computex press conferences, Nvidia distinctly avoided any mention of DX11 or parts that run it..

Mid-day tomorrow, the winners and losers for the next 2-3 quarters will become very very clear.

DX11 and 40nm? Does that mean we could see some better performing mid-range cards with fanless coolers?

Re: AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

OK, maybe I am having a cynical day... but I have a DX10.1 card (the 4870 X2) which is great... but the lack of games for it make that functionality a bit rubbish. Hawx is about the only decent 10.1 title.

So this hardware demo proves that the R800 series is real, great. But when will we see games that actually use the features and make it any more useful than a 4800?

Re: AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

When did games start showing up when nvidia showed off there dx10 compliant cards and got raving results for it..

the moment that dx10/10.1/11 start getting ground at all.. it'll pick up.. it's already starting to pick up.

its picking up? Nonsense... there are about 30 DX10 games and less than ten of those are 10.1. Thats a tiny amount. And there are not that many more announced.

I'm sure the R800 series will be good but at the moment its only possible to consider it as "faster" than the current cards. The original post makes it out to be the best thing since sliced bread, and the fact that Nvidia has nothing to match it means very little because by the time there are games which use DX11 there will be an nvidia card to compete.

Re: AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

the thing is... DX11 presents some killer MAJOR changes to the dx lineup.. while dx10/10.1 provided some very powerful new enhancements..... programs weren't inclined to bother with it which is just plain ol lazy.

DX11 makes use of some pretty significant features that could present even easier and more realistic rendering.... ray tracing is quite exciting....

So they've learned from the "no DX10 on XP" commotion then

Re: AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

Well this has answered a few questions that for sure.

Charlie Demijerian from the inquirer has started his own site called semi accurate and AMD are supporting him.

Rumour is it that the inquirer are being shut down in their current state by incisive media due to all the hassles in the last year with the rubbish news posting and biased "in the pocket" journalist they ended up delivering.

Not shocked to see all the news on charlies new site is directly linked to slagging off Nvidia and applauding AMD. To make it even more interesting, AMD staff are posting links to his site on all the major tech forums (like here) to get it off the ground.

As for DX11? well lets hope to god its worth more than DX 10.1 ever was, what a total waste of time that was. Didn't change gaming at all for anyone this year.

Wow, didnt even notice that Catalyst Maker had linked to another site on his post... thought it was written by him seeing as it was so pro-ATI in its wording. Looking at the site and seeing that its all Anti-Nvidia posting from that Charlie guy and seeing ATI pimping it looks very bad for them. He cant even write a headline without showing his bias! (e.g. "Nvidia 40nm parts *YAWN* delayed again")

He had very little credibility for the stuff he has been doing for the last few years in that other site and to see ATI so actively involved and at such a high level, cant be good. Its the same type of negative PR that everyone used to hate from Nvidia. How things change!
