iPhone OS 3.0 Coming on June 17

Apple senior vice president of iPhone software Scott Forstall used Monday's WWDC keynote with the news that iPhone users have waited months to hear: The new iPhone 3.0 OS will be released on June 17, 2009.

iPhone 3.0 will be a free release for all iPhone customers -- both original iPhone users and iPhone 3G users will be able to download it at no charge once it's released. iPod touch customers can download the new release for $10, and it will work on first- and second-generation iPod touch models.

"Find My Phone" is a new feature in iPhone 3.0 that helps you locate your iPhone if you've misplaced it. It's specifically for MobileMe customers -- you can log in to MobileMe and it will show you where you left your phone. You can send a message to the phone, and will play an alert, even if you left the phone in silent mode. What's more, remote wipe isn't a feature just for system administrators anymore -- "Find My Phone" will you erase all your data, if your iPhone falls into the wrong hands.
this will come in handy for those who tend to forget where they;ve left their phones

My sister has a Ipod Touch,as she already paid £5 to update it to V2.0 i would of thought any future updates after was going to be free.

any one know if the charge for V3.0 still applies ?

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Coming on June 17

yes it does, as technically you're buying an upgrade to a new OS for your iPod Touch, it's like buying Vista when you have XP already

iPhone users get the update "free" as it's technically part of the contract between Apple and the respective carriers to provide the update at no obvious cost to the end user

As for whether it's worth the cost, i'm not so sure - most of the updates are iPhone specific, though some of the UI features (spotlight searching) and potential features for new apps might sway you, but it's definately not a must-have like the 2.0 software upgrade was

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Coming on June 17

I know its free for the Iphone... I read the article this morning

I was about 80% sure this was not going to be free.. I just wish they made it a little clearer in the article about the Touch.

Thanks.

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Coming on June 17

I watched the coverage last night on the apple blog site, quite a few exciting announcements with the faster processor, better camera, video support and the new OS looks mega.

Quite a few price cuts on their laptops and more moving to the excellent unibody chassis.

Snow leopard looks exciting, have been playing with some betas - solid already.

I'm not sure if the pricing has been listed yet, but if it's like last year, whether it's 5£ or $10, it's still very reasonable.
