$700 for Nokia's new phone. Are they nuts?

For a company that has said it wants to be a player in the U.S. market, it doesn't look like Nokia is trying very hard.

On Tuesday the mobile phone giant said its flagship smartphone, the N97, which was announced in December, has gone on sale in the U.S. at the whopping price tag of $699. This price isn't that shocking considering the phone has already launched in Europe for a comparable price. But in the U.S. where consumers are accustomed to paying $200 for a smartphone, it seems a bit ridiculous.

The reason the price of the N97 is still so high is that Nokia is not selling it through any particular carrier. Instead it will be sold to U.S. customers in Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as online.

I always associated Nokia as the cheap free phone provider in most companies. lmao.

I'd prefer to walk with nokia 3310 and have high end rig than spend hundreds on a shit that could be stolen in a second.

Try to do a price comparison on this and the iPhone, where you are forced to some crappy provider for 24 months....

It might not be that expensive.

Haven't checked phone deals in ages but in the UK the N96 could be had on far better packages than the iPhone 3G.

the iPhone started at 800$ out-of-contract here in Canada
pretty much everything HTC offers is from 300 to 900$

700$ = 199 or 249 with a 3-year agreement .... pretty much right in line with the top phones
