Engineers unveil new lighting solutions
"Lighting our houses, streets and commercial buildings constitutes more than 20 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption. Light emitting diodes (LED) can reduce consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases because of their high-efficiency conversion of electricity to visible light," said Ines Lima Azevedo, a recent Ph.D. graduate from Carnegie Mellon's Department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP), and a researcher at the university's Climate Decision Making Center and its Electricity Industry Center.
Azevedo, along with M. Granger Morgan, the Lord Chair Professor of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon and EPP Department Head, and Fritz Morgan, chief technology officer of Philips-Color Kinetics and a Carnegie Mellon alumnus, found that some LED technologies are already cheaper than most commonly used lighting technologies. The researchers concluded that it is imperative that society moves to solid-state lighting to save money and to help the environment. _______________ Source: Physorg

Re: Engineers unveil new lighting solutions
interesting.... hopefully the efficacy of high powered LEDs can rise above the output of HID systems in all applications...

They get the prices down and I will be more than happy to buy them!
I bought a ton of CFL's already. I am always looking for ways to reduce light wattage usage! I consider lighting to be a good part of my home electric bill... |

Re: Engineers unveil new lighting solutions
i've been able to sell LED light bulbs and T8/T5 tubes for nearly a year....
Heres the rediculious part.. the production of a LED T8 tube that is comparible in brightness costs actually less overall then a standard high efficient T8 flourecent.... however a T8 4ft is $3.5 per tube.. while a LED T8 is over $70 bucks...per tube.. wtf... However a T8 LED draws only 2.3watts where as a T8 flourecent draws 39watts. A 100watt Bulb, 21 watt Flourecent CFL, 1.5 watt LED are all comparible brightness wise when made properly... and provided by a good supplier... OF them all, the LED not only draws FAR less.. but it's production is actually quite safe/enviromentally friend.. and very easy to do.
