Windows 7: Free Upgrades End With SP1

Microsoft will discontinue a program under which businesses can upgrade XP-based PCs purchased after October to Windows 7 for free once the first Windows 7 service pack becomes available.

The plan has not been widely publicized by Microsoft, but was noted in a research report released Friday by an analyst at IT advisory firm Gartner.

Which essentially translates into microsoft's way of holding companies to the fire to upgrade to windows 7 quickly after it releases. Not a bad idea IMO considering that Windows 7 is a fantastic OS.

Re: Windows 7: Free Upgrades End With SP1

yep I agree that Win7 is great. but for your and me.

some companies like mine still rely on ancient software tools that run on WinXP only. I see that the VM WinXP mode may be suitable but the employees will have to learn how to use that (and learn to love it too?)

I just hope SAP and Cisco VPN launch some compatible software in time. Those 2 are essential.

the rest is programmed from the inside, so let's hope our programmers know what they're doing

You do have to remember not every company moves as quick to upgrade software for compatibility, but with The compatibility mode, maybe they will be inspired.

hehe, some people here still work using an app that uses "ingres" ... the application installer gives the following error msg:

"Your Operating System does not appear to be compatible with Windows 95/98 - are you sure you want to continue?"

now THAT'S old software.
