I had a say in those builds, so hopefully they prove to be good sellers and solid gaming machines !

Re: DriverHeaven approved Dell XPS systems

I still have trust issues with DELL. When you work with them all day and then go service as many as I do in my off-time you tend to not trust a brand any more. But I'm up to get the trust back.

EDIT:
They look like decent systems but I'm perplexed as to why the base "gaming" system is running 2GB of RAM. Seems a little low to me for any real gaming

guys we only have specific say into products as they are going to be dominated by price points. we just had influence over some components.

Whether you like Dell or not, is hardly likely to change.

Ah, okay. I was only curious. Thanks for the info. My 730x looks and performs like a top fuel dragster. I've never been a big fan of Dell but I picked mine up on eBay with a full service warranty for $1000 and it has proven to be a great investment.

I'd like to go with TRI-SLI but then I'd have to substitute my onboard sound for my X-Fi and I'm not willing to make that kind of sacrifice.

Re: DriverHeaven approved Dell XPS systems

Absolutely. I am aware a huge portion of our audience will build their own machines and obviously this is of no interest, but Dell wanted to work with us and spec a few machines which would make good price points and be capable gaming machines for those who like the no hassle all in one pre built systems.

We aimed to recommend some options for them which they took on board and im pretty happy with the configurations they are using.

To be fair to Dell the guys we know are really working hard on improving their public persception with our specific audience and they really seem keen on producing good solid gaming machines.

Oh yes I agree totally. It seems to me the Dell started caring about their image and products a lot more after the aqusition of AlienWare. It seems to me like that top of the line system is a pretty good one, 8gigs of RAM the whole bit. Hey what better people to ask the opinion of on this kind of thing than dh people?

Personally, I wonder though why they still use the XPS brand since they now have AlienWare as well its like they have two full custom gaming lines of PCs. But in a sense, its very similar to a company like General Motors in the car industry having two luxury brands (Buick and Cadillac)

well you can see an answer to this in our recent interview with a top Alienware employee over here (Frank Azor). http://www.hardwareheaven.com/intervie...interviewid=19

DH: Is there still a future for the Dell XPS machines with Alienware obviously being the more attractive gaming brand?

Frank: The Alienware M17x replaces the Alienware Area-51 m17x and Dell XPS-Gaming M1730 17” systems. Alienware will transition to the only brand that denotes systems designed for gamers in the Dell product portfolio while XPS will be reserved for those customers seeking premium design and performance in product brands like Inspirion Studio and Adamo. You will find some systems that are very capable gaming systems carrying the XPS brand however systems designed by and for gamers will remain exclusively Alienware branded.

i wonder if AMD Phenom II duals and quads would have made the cost to performance any better though?

The latest AMD CPUs are very good - I did hand over a few builds for those as well, haven't checked the Dell site to see if they are up - might be on Alienware.

Re: DriverHeaven approved Dell XPS systems

yea AMD is getting very good again,

the Phenom II 550 really cuts through with nearly equivalent performance to the E8400 at around $60 less

with that, the Phenom II 920 or 940 can really overpower the Q9400 at $30+ less retail....

I thought the same on that Teme a surplus of current stock at Dell. We also have to factor in the advise of DH and Z here they might not be as savvy as we are for gamers.

Overall for someone who just wants to buy something that does what it should nicely done overall

The $999.00 looks to be a wonderful value, and the $1599.00 should be very powerful! Nice input there - could be very helpful for a lot of folks!
