Japan may add noise to quiet hybrid cars for safety

The petrol-electric vehicles, which in recent months have become the country's top-selling autos, hum along almost soundlessly when they are switched from fuel to battery mode.

"We have received opinions from automobile users and vision-impaired people that they feel hybrid vehicles are dangerous," a transport ministry official said.

common sense if you ask me.
we've had over a hundred years of being used to cars making some kind of engine rattle, can't expect everybody to simply adjust overnight, especially the vision-impaired etc who rely more on their hearing.

Interesting feedback on this and I didn't expect this many responses on it. I also think this is a good idea we have had a number of them into the shop and on battery you can't hear them.

I guess we'd all miss the hub and bub of traffic noise. I think its a good thing though, i'm not keen on BIG city life,

if they do end up doing this, i hope it's not a buzzer or beeping of some sort. i hope it's something more naturally car-like.

This makes me giggle.

Just put a big enough sound system in the cars and it'll sort itself out. You might even be able to make some money out of it. Different system levels for different models. Your standard 4 speaker setup in the base model, 6 speaker in the mid range model and a high end, 6 speaker/1 sub in the high end model.

I'm a genius!

EDIT: I re-read the thread and caught posts about those with hearing loss or deafness and I can see where that may be a problem. Hmm...noise pollution or safety?

Like a full blown hemi, or a Harley 1200, ..... just for the noise. you know?

Seriously though, I hope it's not a beeper..... that would bug the heck out of me.

actually now that i think about it, what an interesting world it would be if cars made zero sound. harleys would be quiet.......weird.
