Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
Going from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is relatively straightforward. So one might think that moving from a pre-release version of Windows 7 to the final version would also be simple.
One would be wrong. That's because the upgrade versions of the Windows operating system (the cheapest way to move to the final version) check for a previous paid version of Windows on the drive. That means, if a user did a clean installation of Windows 7 on their test system (as recommended by Microsoft), that same user will have to back up their data, reinstall their original operating system (XP or Vista), then install Windows 7, restore their data, and then reinstall their applications. _______________ Source: CNET

that's why if you're using a "test" OS, you keep your other OS installed on a seperate drive aswell

Re: Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
That is pretty lame. So it isn't possible to a clean install with W7 without XP or Vista installed previously? Uber lame.

Re: Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
Let's see...I'm getting WIN 7 Premium Upgrade pre-ordered for 99.00, and I'm supposed to bitch about having to do a 15 min. re-install* of Vista or XP?
I swear, if it was raining $100.00 bills, there would be people that would bitch because they had to bend down to pick them up. For those that are bitching about it, go buy the FULL version and STFU. *Yes, you CAN do an install of Vista or XP in about 15 mins. if you install it from a flash drive.

Re: Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
why would testers complain about this?
did they not expect at least a format/reinstall? I mean seriously, why even do an upgraded install..... i find more machines royally wigged out due to doing that.... best install is a fresh install..... no upgrade crap

Re: Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
Actually it is possible to upgrade from a rc version to RTM. It's not officially supported, but a small tweak make's it possible.
Though I hardly can advise on upgrading, do a clean install, which every tester should know and if not... well stay the FUCK away from a test version of an OS. |

Re: Windows 7 testers have long path to upgrade
Been there, done that. *cough*
Using the "Windows Easy Transfer" feature helps, but just to be sure it's best to back up your whole Users folder, ProgramData, and Program Files folder(s) manually as well. So much software and games are spreading their stuff around wildly these days. But Windows Easy Transfer saves quite a bit of time and frustration. |
