Powermac G5 video: worlds fastest desktop computer

Apple have a presentation video available on their site in quicktime format its actually a very nice presentation and goes into the ins and outs of the hardware from all the outer shell to the layout internally and then the cooling system. Of course it wouldnt be a presentation video without the array of staff talking about how wonderful the whole package is

They says its the fastest desktop computer in the world (at this point), and go to great lengths to ensure you are aware of that !

If you have 5 minutes to spare go check it out here

Interesting, nonetheless. I wonder how a dual Sledgehammer system would hold up compared to the IBM chips.

EDIT: Neon, they were careful with their words. They said, the first 64-bit processor in a desktop. We don't have clawhammer yet

actually dude they didnt make these benchmarks but there is some of the benchmarks that you can see on the site were they openly admit to having "apple optimizations" to the benchmarks, but the funny thing tho is that we all know that all of the benchmarks are so called "apple optimized". No one liked how Nvidia "optimized" drivers for 3dmark so apple shouldnt optimize either. None of the stuff is real world tests EXCEPT the quake III test and thats just one game. I want to see some tests using software that people like you and me people, thinking about buying one of these things, will use in their day to day activities.

on another note i would have thought they would have waited and added PCI-express graphics but that may come later
and one last thing i dont understand why it matters if you have the Worlds fastest ever desktop pc if it cant even run some of the software i fun everyday on my pc. I definatly wouldnt ever buy one for the gaming i cant play counter-strike on it, i cant play doom 3 on it, i cant play half life 2 on it i can go on.....

and as always with these things you spend more for less i persomally like to buy pcs were i can get more hardware for my buck NOT were i get x ammount of hardware for my monney and the rest of my money is going to a pretty little case

But in the end there is still reasons to buy the machine lilke for the optimized software like the adobe products because in the end the optimizations let it preform better on the mac than on the pc.

and lastly i cant wait untill the day they have to put their OS on x86 compatible hardware and then none of their hardware will be propiretary proprietary

sorry for the rant

rolleyes Apple Crapple

Actually I have a PC at home which sits on my Desktop and has Opteron CPU in it thus I have 64 Bit Desktop system. Well thats beside the point. What realy gets me is the fact "Uber" architecture used for G5 interface is realy the HyperTransport Design from AMD which is PC platform. I hate Apple so much because they

Not really. Even Itanium came out before Opteron. At any rate, neither AMD nor Intel nor Apple (who doesn't produce their own processors anyway) produced the world's first 64-bit CPU. That distinction belongs to the Alpha processor. Originally made by Digital Equipment Corporation (and subsequently purchased by Compaq... who was subsequently purchased by HP), the Alpha processor is the only non-x86 processor that can run Windows NT.

Interesting bit of trivia: The FSB bus that is utilized by the AMD Athlon was borrowed pretty much directly from previous versions of the Alpha. Both use the EV6 bus.
