Radeon 9600 Mobility tested versus Geforce GO5600
WE HAD A NICE OPPORTUNITY yesterday to test two top notch mobile graphics system with the latest DirectX 9 hardware from both Nvidia and ATI. It's not easy to get notebooks with this systems but if you are persistent enough you can get some time with them.
The ATI system is an unannounced unit that we were not allowed to photograph, running with a Pentium 4 2.4GHz mobile CPU with Mobility Radeon 9600 (formally known as M10) that was running at 350MHz and 283MHz memory. All we can say about the unit is that it is a wide screen unit. The notebook with Geforce GO5600 (formerly known as NV31M) with 128 bit interface was powered by a bit slower CPU, a 2.2 GHz packed inside a Toshiba retail machine that is actually now for sale. The Geforce GO5600 was running at 270MHZ for the Core and 300MHz memory. The drivers used were 43.36 with their default settings, except that I turned off V while I was testing. We were able to run a couple of benchmarks, with some interesting results. I ran into some problems when I was testing, since the display in ATI notebook did not let me go higher than 1280x1024 making it impossible to test games on heavy resolutions, while the Toshiba's display was easily able to go to 1600x1200. The second problem I ran into was that with the 43.36 drivers, each time when I was turning FSAA 4X I just got screen flashes after running Quake 3 and this was occurring in all resolutions. I hope that Nvidia and Toshiba will fix this driver glitch. The funny stuff is that FSAA 4X together with Anisotropic filtering 8X didn’t cause any problems. Read More... |
