New AA batteries Are Coming
The latest issue of Wired Magazine has a quick note that Duracell is finally replacing its 56-year-old Double "A" batteries. The new version, dubbed LP1 will feature a new slim version and will be disposable just like it's cylinder counter-part. Currently Sony, Panasonic and dozens of others are creating portables to take advantage of the new thin battery. Mostly smaller MP3 players coming our way.
Wired doesn't report how soon such devices will be available, but one can expect it to be fairly soon now that word is out about the new batteries. No mention if these upcoming electronic devices will support other brands of batteries and although they only mention Duracell as creating these thinner AA batteries, Energizer is most likely to follow. The article fails to mention if the LP1 holds more or less energy than today's standard AA. ___________________ Source: Ownt |

They surely can't be "replacing" - as there must be millions (billions) of devices using the conventional AA format.
At Duracell - http://www.duracell.com/prismatics/ Of course, you have to question the logic of bringing in a new DISPOSABLE PRIMARY battery design, in an era which favours more cost-effective and GREENER rechargeables. Would you choose a digital camera that used THESE, or one with an internal Li-ion that recharges from the USB ? Maybe the range will also end up with a NiMH component and recharger. The final nail in the coffin - until this system actually DOES get popular (if ever) ther will be a problem of availability - and are duracell the only ones who will be making this format? The strength of the "consumer AA batter" is its universality. Available in Zinc Chloride for lower power demands, Alkaline and "performance Alkaline" for moderate demand/longer standby Lithium for High drain or very long standby running NiMH rechargeable for the lowest ongoing energy cost. I will vote with my feet against this new format! |

How about "adding" rather than "replacing"
Instead of "replacing", mebbe "creating an alternative" would be a better way to phrase it. The AA battery ain't going anywhere for a while, they'll still be making them; they're just going to be making these too for some ultra-thin luvving.
