Intel confirms PCI Express switching push

CHIP GIANT Intel said today that it will put an advanced switching specification using PCI Express in its comms product.
But PCI Express, as we reported earlier, will also be adopted into network and storage processors, Ethernet controllers and chipsets for embedded products.

The firm will release development tools for PCI Express by the end of the year, but we won't see the products it promises until the first half of 2005, the company said in a press release.

The firm also said a large number of other firms had joined the "Arapahoe" initiative, a loose consortium of people who will support its advanced switching for PCI Express.

Well known names in there include EMC, Hitachi, Sun, Xyratex, Texas Instruments and Fujitsu, said Tim Parker, a PR for the "Arapahoe" group.
