Nokia suing Apple over the iPhone

Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, has said that it is suing its US rival Apple for infringing patents on mobile phone technology for the iPhone.

Nokia said it had not been compensated for its technology, and accused Apple of "trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation".

The ten alleged patent infringements involve wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption.

Apple's shares dipped after news of the action broke.

The breaches applied to all models of the iPhone since its launch in 2007, Nokia added.

The entire patent system is the biggest load of bull, I have ever seen.

I have seen so many patents that are for basically nothing and no implementation but people sue for them all the time.

That has to be the most vague patent list I have ever seen, and as for encryption etc. I guess they better look at the blackberry, BTW iphone runs on Mac OS X Did Nokia Make OS X? I think not.

Yeah what I hear is that Nokia claims that Apple wants get "free ride" on the technologies that Nokia developed over the years of it's phone making business. Now as we all know this is a bit complicated deal but it does look that Nokia has the upper hand in this since there are at least 40 companies that pay royalties to Nokia, for using the technologies developed by Nokia, but Apple has refused to pay any. Anyway it's going to be long trial and we will know for sure the result in few years...

Well I suppose this was bound to happen sooner or later. I had the assumption that apple had to have borrowed tech from at least one other company since they went from having no phones to having the most popular phone for the masses in under two years. I mean come on.

But it may all be just Nokia blowing smoke who really knows.

well given the number of company's that already pay Nokia for use of their tech, it seems reasonable to assume that Apple must have used something in the iphone that nokia have already long since laid claim to..

interesting. this thread's been here since just after 8 last night, and craig hasn't popped in to mention how much he loves his iPhone yet..

Did I mention I love my iPhone? Remote Desktop to the DH server while I'm out on the piss in town? Score! What the servers gone down and my phone just told me score!

You too? I think they rushed to beta to try and appease all the people who were throwing tantrums. They should have waited because now they look foolish.

If I had to write about one thing all the time id get bored. Been using macs for 20 years now, but my tastes are too varied for that.... DH is my baby, caters for everything. Also enjoy building PC's too

Thank to Nokia that you have iPhone and not an high-end iPod... Without the innovations and development from Nokia in WiFi and 2/3G Apple wouldn't be making phones

No idea. i have a similar app on my E71. Cant say I have ever had a use for it mind you.

I didn't actually know APPLE had that kind of cash on hand, thats insane. I know their 60 day stock purchase of all ATI's 4850 video cards would have cost a fair bit mind you.

To be perfectly honest, If Nokia does win this one against Apple then it wouldn't surprise me if the iPhone is taken off the market. Either that or Apple takes a nasty kick in the wallet and buys some rights to use Nokia's patents.

The iphone wont go off the market. thats a ridiculous assumption. What Nokia are suing for is actually a breach of a patent inside the iphone, its nothing that actually is massively important to the production of the phone. Nokia would much rather get a financial payment for this, and Apple can clearly already afford it. These matters take time as Apple will battle any costs to get them as low as possible. Just how business operates. Nokia are taking on a giant here, it won't be easy. Microsoft have had many strong cases against them and in the end they just pay off the other parties, im sure the same will happen here.

lol... 30 Billion isn't enough Nokias net worth is far greater than that.... And Nokia too has deep pockets of money

[EDIT] it has been estimated that Nokia have put over 40 Billion euros to the research and development of the patents that they claim that Apple is violating... And there is large amount of other companies that are paying license fees to Nokia. This will make the case stronger for Nokia. Remember the battle with Qualcomm ... They might sue Apple too ... And Ericson ...
