ITU Specs Micro USB as Universal Phone Charger
The International Telecommunication Union, which also serves as the technology arm of the United Nations, has backed the micro USB standard for a universal phone charger.
"Every mobile phone user will benefit from the new Universal Charging Solution (UCS), which enables the same charger to be used for all future handsets, regardless of make and model," the ITU said in a statement on Thursday. USB has essentially been the universal charging standard for some time. The ITU's UCS, however, will standardize the connector that attaches to the phone, using the micro USB form factor. "UCS chargers will also include a 4-star or higher efficiency rating - up to three times more energy-efficient than an unrated charger," the UCS aded in a statement. "This is a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of mobile charging, which also has the benefit of making mobile phone use more straightforward," Malcolm Johnson, the director of the ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB), said in a statement. "Universal chargers are a commonsense solution that I look forward to seeing in other areas." Motorola, Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments agreed this past summer to standardize on the micro USB plug in Europe. ___________ source: PC Mag |
