Default Post R300 27500 3Dmarks ??

There is a some interesting screen captures of a Radeon 9500 Max posted at 3dfxzone , very interesting indeed.
The real question is are they for real, does Maxx refer to dual R300's ??? Discuss in our Upcoming Ati Card Forum

Nope I say it as a long time, non-card-carrying member of the un-official (but best) ATI tech support group around; Rage Underground. I never owned a rage128 MAXX, but I've had to deal with hundreds upon hundreds of help requests for 'em! After a while we used to fight over who had to break the bad news to the new guy posting the never-to-be-finally-over-with-question-post of "I just got a rage128 MAXX and I'm having some trouble getting it to work under 2K/XP, is there anything you can do to help?"

And the trees whispered a gentle, "No."......(Good job trees!)

It just seems like a hedonistic exercise in futility! If'n such a beast does exist I just fear a return to the nightmares, and please don't give me no "ATI has really improved their driver support lately" talk 'cause a couple of months of decent behavoir does not make up for over half a decade of crap! They still have yet to have a decent product launch before I would do anything else but double-over in laughter/tears at the announcement of an R300 MAXX!

Oh, and I really don't think anyone would be having a working proto-type without someone on one of the ATI boards I frequent having have heard and posted SOMETHING about it besides mere speculation!

</rant>

(BTW-The rant ain't directed at anyone here or anywhere else, just at ATI in general.)

Actually, the problem with Rage 128 MAXX and NT OSes had to do with AGP. The MAXX was *two* AGP devices, with one IRQ, in one slot. NT OSes did not like that at all. The 8500 AIW, for example, has a R200 and a Firewire controller. For that reason, an AGP-to-AGP bridge is used on the card. Using this AGP-to-AGP bridge, an R200 MAXX (or R100 MAXX, for that matter) is not only possible, it would probably work fine.

Driver problems? Sure. Not like ATI is #1 in that field to start with.
Crippled, totally nonfunctional, general broken except in 9X? No, not anymore.

With that said, the FPS from the tests don't line up with the score, and it's almost exactly as if the mofo used the ancient speedhack (Note he's in 9X, where the speedcheat works, doubt that's a coincidence). His chip name looks Photoshopped in, His base screen and his results screen don't match, His driver info page looks like he either .inf hacked or photoshopped.

It's BS, pure and simple. Don't make me go dummy up perfectly legit looking 'NV30' benches to refute this crap.

Catalyst25 is on a distinguished road

It's a nice idea, but I doubt ATI will go the dual VPU approach anytime soon. One reason being they'd be competing against themselves. Another being the already high price of the cards... add more VPUs, board architecture, ram, etc.... no one could afford it.

Add to this that ATI already took the steps (and I'm sure have been comtemplating it for quite some time) to move their product cycle up from 18 months to 24 months due to a stagnant PC market .... draw your own conclusion
