Review: WD SE 200 GB @ Driverheaven

Well the articles are coming fast and hard this week, and we are proud to announce another review from one of our supermoderators Veridian3. This time we put a luxurious Western Digital 200 gb special edition drive through its paces.

"Western Digital have pulled out all the stops on this item, from the packaging down to the free extras everything oozes quality. Upon opening the box you find the drive itself is suspended in the centre of the box with good clearance all around (roughly 1 inch in every direction) resulting in a very low chance of damage being caused to the drive during transit. The normal extras are included with the drive, 1 jumper, 4 screws to secure the drive and an IDE cable. The manual that is included is truly one of the best to be included with any PC component. Finally, included in the box is a free PCI Ultra ATA 100 controller. As Windows only supports hard drives up to 137Gb Western Digital have worked round this by adding a PCI IDE controller and driver disk to add support for the larger drive size. "

NucleuZ is on a distinguished road

Great articles

The article is good, but I wonder how much an effect the smaller size of the IBM drive cache, 2 MB instead of 8 MB, makes on the comparison.

Really one should have as similar drives as possible to make a good comparison, however it is still decent to show what a nice drive the WD is.

I really wish to see a comparison of a non-Raid 160GB setup vs. a 80GBx2 Raid-0 setup of similar drives, e.g. Seagate Barracuda 7.7200 S-ATA series. Anyone seen a review on something similar. I want to know if it is worth it to run two smaller drives in RAID-0 instead of buying a larger single drive? Anyone has an idéa?
