As Intel lowered the price of 865PE chipsets in late June, motherboard prices are now adjusting to reflect the lower chipset prices. According to first-tier motherboard makers, FOB wholesale and retail prices of 865PE motherboards have dropped US$5-10 since the boards were first released. The drop in the prices of the motherboards is aimed to entice consumers.
However, as 865 motherboards still carry a relatively high price tag, many budget conscientious end-users may still opt for Intel’s 845 motherboards. Motherboards with the 865PE chipset are priced between US$75-90 FOB and motherboards with the Intel 845 chipsets hover around the US$40 level.
The relatively stagnant growth in sales of the 865PE motherboards reported by distributors has caused motherboard makers to take a cautiously conservative view of the third quarter. Nearly none of the second-tier motherboard makers is carrying the chipset in its inventories, with only first-tier motherboard makers and IC distributors holding the chipsets in stock, sources said.
