Intel misses market share target for 865 chipset

Intel’s 865 chipset garnered a 10-15% market share in motherboard shipments in June, falling short of the 20% the company had hoped for, according to first-tier motherboard makers.

Motherboards using the 865 chipset accounted for 10-15% of Asustek Computer’s June shipments, less than 10% of Micro-star International’s (MSI) and 15% of Gigabyte Technology’s, according to the companies’ internal estimates.

In addition, the likelihood of any significant rise in July is very low, according to motherboard company sources.

With the upcoming release of Intel’s 848P chipset, at a lower price than the 865, it may take much longer 865-based motherboards to become the mainstream, the sources added.
