LAN gaming "too sanitised, commercialised, media friendly"

THE LATEST ISSUE of the Abit Newsletter has decided to stir the pot again, this time entering what it describes as the "murky and obscure world of computer hardware politics".
It's quite refreshing to see a vendor prepared to chance it, and get a bit controversial, don't you think, rather than just send endless pixellated reams of crap about paradigms, innovations and "way forwards".

Abit says in its newsletter that the Million Man LAN in Kentucky illustrates how things have changed, with LANs becoming big business ventures, consequently having "behind the scenes wheelings and dealings at what are supposed to be fun events".

The firm reckons that companies used to get involved in these kind of events just to get some exposure and meet gamers at the grass root levels.

But things have changed, says Abit. "Companies now treat these events like trade shows or staged press events, often without the consent or knowledge of the organizers," it alleges.

The article continues: "In other cases, the organizers are fully complicit, accepting huge sponsorship fees in return for a careflly controlled media-friendly environment with which to present their products to an essentially captive and enthusiastic audience".
