Some times I think that AMD's best PR people work for their competitors.

I don't know about any bonus, but chances are it will come with Starfoce or Tages.

Pretty lame guess my next system will be AMD. It's a matter of principles.

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

It depends how fair or how greedy Intel decides to be.

If a CPU is sold for a price that corresponds to it's out of the box performance, that's obviously okay. And if then there's a chance to pay $50 to turn it into a $50 more expensive model, that's not so unfair either. Low end CPUs are already commonly made from mid-range models by disabling some physically present units and this would make perfect sense for them.

On the other hand, if the disabling isn't done simply to fill an empty price point and if the user ends up paying full price of a piece of silicon yet being forced to add a premium over that to get all of it working, that's just disgusting.

If I could find one this would deserve an "epic fail" emote.

Oh wait... face palm.

Oh.. and because this is an epic fail.. double face palm.

That is exactly why I've been using AMD CPUs exclusively (except 2 netbooks where there was no choice) since the K6-233 days.

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

I wonder how long before the software becomes available via torrents for everybody to unlock their Pentium into a budget gamer's wet dream?

AMD has been allowing motherboard manufacturers to do this for years through the BIOS at little or no extra cost other than the technology of the chipset so it looks like it may be a money grab. $50 likely won't equal the performance boost you will get.

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

People will bitch.... and then buy it anyways. Then they will bitch that it didn't do much as far as speed goes.... but they will live with it.... until it overheats. Then they will bitch some more. All along Intel laughs all the way to the bank.

Are these guys taking lessons from Apple?

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

If they can afford to sell the better CPU at the lower price (which is what it turns out they are doing), why don't they just sell it unlocked in the first place to thrash the competition?

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

It's about maximizing the profit. Lowering the price reduces the profit on a per unit basis so it's only a good idea if the additional market share the price cut brings you makes up for that.

Re: Intel: Pay to unlock your CPU

The problem, in short, is that Intel CPUs compete as much with other Intel CPUs as with anything else. More competition (as in not just one other firm) would see a very different playing field I think.
